LGBTIQA+ Partner Story

The Advocates is happy to spotlight our long-term partner, Khaleem Ali

What brought you to LGBTIQ+ advocacy?/Why do you do LGBTIQ+ advocacy?

As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community in a homophobic country, I entered advocacy with a personal mission. I wanted to create spaces of acceptance for those who come after me, driven by my own experiences. Despite facing discrimination from family, former friends, and bullies, I refuse to let others define my worth. My advocacy is grounded in a belief in human rights and the necessity of equality and equity, aiming to effect change and make my country more inclusive.

I've encountered formidable challenges stemming from the undue influence of religion on state affairs, compounded by outdated education systems and a dearth of accessible information regarding LGBTQIA+ issues.

What were the challenges you saw in your community and what improvements have you seen because of your work?

Navigating the landscape of LGBTQIA+ advocacy in my homeland, I've encountered formidable challenges stemming from the undue influence of religion on state affairs, compounded by outdated education systems and a dearth of accessible information regarding LGBTQIA+ issues. Amidst a backdrop of growing polarization and social media baiting, conservatism remains a formidable barrier. In response, my efforts have focused on implementing robust reporting mechanisms and evaluating compliance, holding officials accountable to foster a more inclusive society. Through this work, I've not only inspired fellow LGBTQIA+ activists but also promoted awareness to demystify the movement, aiming to bridge divides and ignite meaningful dialogue.

How can others support you?

Support for LGBTQIA+ activists in homophobic countries is crucial for progress. One way to help is by amplifying our voices through social media and other platforms. Donating to organizations supporting LGBTQIA+ rights in these countries can also make a significant impact. Educating yourself and others about the challenges we face and advocating for policy changes and protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals are other meaningful ways to show support. Finally, offering emotional support and solidarity can make a world of difference to activists facing discrimination and backlash.
