The Advocates Submits Comment on Trump Administrations Recent Efforts to Enforce Gender Ideology through Passports

March 20, 2025

The Advocates for Human Rights fights for the rights of LGBTIQ+ people around the world, including here in the United States. As part of the U.S. Administration's recent moves to define men and women through sex assigned at birth, which erases and invalidates transgender, intersex, and non-binary people, the Department of State has proposed new guidelines for passports. These include removing the option to select "X" as your gender if neither "male" nor "female" corresponds with your gender identity; and requiring that passports reflect people's sex assigned at birth, even if this does not correspond with their legal gender or any other identity documents. The Advocates has submitted a comment on these proposed guidelines, calling them blatant sex-based discrimination that violates individuals' constitutional human rights and that goes against international standards protecting the dignity of LGBTIQ+ people.
