Ethiopia - Committee Against Torture - Death Penalty - March 2023

This report addresses Ethiopia's compliance with its human rights obligations with regard to the death penalty. As of November 2022, there are 124 people on death row in Ethiopia. The Federal Supreme Court of Ethiopia has issued sentencing guidelines that purport to reduce the likelihood of persons being sentenced to death as a punishment for their crimes. Nonetheless, Ethiopia has not taken concrete steps to reduce the number of crimes eligible for the death penalty, and the use of torture and other due process violations related to judicial proceedings render all death sentences arbitrary.
