2023 Spring House Parties Wrap Up
This spring, The Advocates for Human Rights hosted a trio of house parties, where we raised critical human rights issues and celebrated the impact of our work. We also raised essential funds to advance our work in women’s rights, migrant rights, and our advocacy for human rights on a global scale.
Chris Bercaw and Mary McKelvey hosted the Migrants Rights’ House Party on March 30th.The Advocates staff attorney Kim Boche spoke about the experiences of unaccompanied kids in the immigration system and opportunities to improve the outcomes of their cases. For example, a child is seven times more likely to win their case and remain in the U.S. with representation from an attorney. Together we will continue to provide free legal services and ease the burden of navigating the court system so that migrant children can devote their energies to growing up, furthering their education, and making a home in the U.S.
Steve and Amy Clay hosted the Women’s Rights House Party on April 20th. Alena Levina pointed out that women’s rights hold a special place in the advancement of global human rights. She talked about her volunteering as a Russian-language translator and interpreter and her message to the United Nations on the situation in Belarus. Her statement has kept the tragic human rights situation in the spotlight. Reading a fellow Belarussian human rights defender’s letter and learning about her continuing fight for women’s rights from exile gave her hope and strength and serves as inspiration for us all.
Jill and Larry Field hosted the Advocating from Local to Global House Party on April 26th. A client activist highlighted the impact of individual voices on the international stage of advancing human rights. This courageous human rights defender spoke about their international justice work with The Advocates, especially their opportunity to speak about the many human rights violations occurring in Ethiopia, including the persecution of the Ethiopian LGBTIQ+ community, at the UN.
