Standing in Solidarity with Nicaragua

The Advocates for Human Rights commemorates the sixth anniversary of the beginning of the student demonstrations and social protests against the Nicaraguan government’s reforms to Social Security which occurred on April 19th, 2018. These protests echoed a long-standing social discontent. We stand in solidarity with all Nicaraguans, and with all those who have advocated and continue to advocate for human rights and democracy in Nicaragua, both within the country and from the diaspora.
We also recognize the persecution and violence directed at the civilian population by the government, and we honor the victims who have experienced violations of their human rights for voicing their opinions and defending other Nicaraguans’ rights.
We invite you to read our new Stakeholder Report for the forthcoming Nicaraguan Universal Periodic Review by the United Nations Human Rights Council. In our report, we recount the systemic human rights violations occurring in Nicaragua, the government’s severe restrictions on civil society, and the curtailing of the rights to freedom of expression and opinion.
Finally, we call on everyone to remain in solidarity with all Nicaraguans in their fight for freedom, dignity, and democracy. We pledge to keep monitoring the country's human rights situation, as well as the well-being and protection of Nicaraguans in the diaspora.

En The Advocates for Human Rights queremos conmemorar el sexto aniversario del 19 de abril de 2018, inicio de las manifestaciones estudiantiles y de protesta social en contra de las reformas a la Ley de Seguridad Social del gobierno nicaragüense; manifestaciones que reflejaron el descontento social acumulado a través de los años en el país. Nos solidarizamos con todos y todas las nicaragüenses y con quienes han abogado y abogan por los derechos humanos y la democracia en Nicaragua, tanto dentro de Nicaragua como desde la diáspora.
The Advocates for Human Rights también reconoce la persecución y violencia dirigida a la población civil por parte del gobierno y honramos a las víctimas que han sufrido violaciones a sus derechos humanos por expresar sus opiniones y defender los derechos de otros nicaragüenses.

En nuestro informe, hacemos un recuento de las violaciones sistemáticas de derechos humanos que ocurren en Nicaragua y las severas restricciones del gobierno a la sociedad civil y la restricción de los derechos a la libertad de expresión y opinión.
Por último, hacemos un llamado a la solidaridad con todas y todos los nicaragüenses en su lucha por la libertad, la dignidad y la democracia, y a seguir vigilando la situación de derechos humanos en el país, así como el bienestar y la protección de los nicaragüenses en la diáspora.
